Benjamin Britten’s Lachrymae: Reflection on a Song  by Dowland, Op. 48a

The University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of    Maestro Mark Russell Smith, isaging in a major project that began early       this fall and culminates in performances of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem in  February and March of 2012.  Part of this project includes an exchange of  student and faculty vocalists with theochschule für Musik in Detmold,                 Germany.  Thirty musicians from the U of MN School of Music will travel to             Germany in mid-February for rehearsals and performances, and return to host   thirty German musicians for a performance on March 1 in Minneapolis and on     March 3 and 4 in the Quad Cities.

Named the Britten Peace Project, this endeavor is part of the School of Music’s   commitment to a thematic curriculum in which the entire student/faculty body       focuses on a composition, musical period and the surrounding                               ideas/philosophies there of.  Courses are being offered which focus on the War Requiem including musical, historical, and poetic analyses of the many facets    of the piece. Faculty from the English and History departments are taking        part,         as well as important Britten scholars, in a series of lectures relating to the Peace Project. A partnership with the Nobel Peace Forum has been forged. The Forum’s over-arching theme of “The Price of Peace” is incredibly relevant to the War Requiem and Wilfred Owens’ powerful poetry. The Forum’s series of     student and community presentations/workshops will offer great insight into       peace and the arts.

Adhering to the Britten theme for the 2011-2012 academic school year, Maestro Smith has programmed Britten’sLachrymae: Reflections on a Song of Dowland, Op 48a for viola and string orchestra for the final University Symphony Orchestra concert of the fall semester commencing on December 12, 2011 in Ted Mann Concert Hall. Students of Professor Korey Konkol and affiliate faculty member Tom Turner are auditioning for the performance opportunity and will be accompanied by pianist Jenya Trubnikava, candidate for the DMA in Collaborative Piano and Accompanying. The distinguished judges for the event include Rebecca Albers (assistant principal viola of the Minnesota Orchestra) and Maiya Papach (acting co-principal viola of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra).

Rebecca Albers is the Assistant Principal Viola of the Minnesota Orchestra.
